Five Things to Consider When Planning Your Patio

A patio is a great extension of your home’s living space. They are perfect for entertaining and relaxing. Patios can have many functions, both fun and functional. When planning and designing your future patio, there are a few important things to plan for that many might not think of.

  • Size – The size of your patio is an important aspect to consider. You will want a patio large enough to be able to do the things you want to use your patio for, but a larger patio uses more materials and will end up costing more. The average patio size is 16 feet by 18 feet.
  • Location – It is important to put some thought into the location of your patio. Most common places are the front and rear of your home. It is also important to keep privacy in mind when designing your patio. You will most likely want the location where you will have the most privacy.
  • Elevation – It is also important to decide what elevation you will want for your home patio. Do you want it at ground level or raised? Building a raised patio will take a little more work and materials, but may be very worth it.
  • Materials – Think about what materials you want your patio to be made out of. The two most common materials are concrete and wood. You can do just one of those materials or a combination of both, depending on your style and needs.
